Texas Bitcoin Miners Shut Down To Save Power For The Network

AUSTIN, TX, May 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Texas Blockchain Council, a trade association representing the bitcoin mining industry in Texas, announced today that bitcoin miners have responded to the hold notice issued yesterday by ERCOT. Some facilities will close while many will slow down in the afternoon this weekend when electricity is in high demand, but will turn back on overnight when demand drops.

“In addition to bringing jobs and tax revenue to rural areas of Texasmany in need of economic revitalization, the bitcoin mining industry also provides greater network resilience by acting as a controllable load,” said Lee Bracher, the president of the Texas Blockchain Council. “Bitcoin miners can shut down in seconds, making them a perfect resource for the network when it comes to frequency balancing and demand response.”

Samantha RobertsonBusiness Development Manager at Bitdeer, said, “Due to unusually high temperatures for the season and an unexpected drop in production within the ERCOT system, Bitdeer has shut down our entire data center at Rockdale on Fridays, except for capacities entered in the reactive reserves. We expect this capability to be recalled and will respond immediately when requested by ERCOT.”

Minors who were already enrolled in ancillary services within ERCOT are ready to quit under ERCOT guidance. As the bitcoin mining industry matures, more and more loads will have the technical ability to take advantage of demand response and controllable load resources, creating a more distributed load that can be used by all Texans during peak demand.
